Honoring the Journey: A Carriage Through Time

Step Into the Past: The Story of a Funeral Carriage from 1884.

This elegant black carriage, known as a “double” or “extended-front” brougham (pronounced broom), was once a symbol of reverence, mourning, and family tradition.

Built in 1884 by Flandrau & Co. of New York, it was designed to carry grieving families directly behind the hearse during funeral processions—providing a solemn, dignified way to say goodbye. Once services concluded, the same carriage often served as transportation back home. Its narrow wheels signal it was made specifically for city streets.

This particular carriage was used by McAlister Brothers, a Charleston-based funeral home founded by James and John McAlister, well-known undertakers and practical embalmers. It served families for decades and was eventually donated to The Charleston Museum in 1967, with the McAlister family funding its restoration in 1995. While the traditions of funerals have evolved, one truth remains: preparing for the future is an act of love.
