I recently had the opportunity to visit the Barry Goldwater Memorial and reflect on the remarkable legacy of a man who was not only a five-term U.S. Senator but also an accomplished amateur photographer. Barry Goldwater’s passion for photography was more than a hobby; it was a lifelong pursuit.
Over the years, he captured the essence of the American West, including breathtaking landscapes and intimate portraits of Native Americans. Upon his passing, he entrusted around 15,000 images to various Arizona institutions, ensuring his art would continue to inspire future generations.
His son, Michael Prescott Goldwater, established the Goldwater Family Foundation to bring his father’s photography to the digital world, making it accessible to all.
This visit made me think about the legacy we each leave behind. Barry Goldwater’s legacy isn’t just in politics but in the way he documented and preserved the history and beauty of his home state.
So, ask yourself: What do you want to be remembered for? How do you want to be remembered? These are essential questions we all should consider when planning our estates. Your legacy, like Goldwater’s, can transcend generations—ensure it’s one that reflects your values and passions.
