If you passed away, what would happen to all of the pictures, videos, emails, and documents that are stored in your Google account? What if you wanted a trusted person to be able to access that information? Google provides an option called a Legacy Contact, which is someone you designate to have access to your Google account after your death. You can even add multiple people.
From an estate planning perspective, I recommend that you name your appointed personal representative (from your Last Will and Testament) as one of those Legacy Contacts.
If you would like to set up your Legacy Contacts in Google, simply follow these steps:
- Go to Google and search for “Google Inactive Account Manager”.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to add a legacy contact.
- Choose someone you trust as your Legacy Contact.
- Give them permission to access your vital information after you pass away.
You can remove or edit these legacy contacts at any time. You can learn more about this process here.
